1. Do I need a building permit for....

If you are planning a construction, reconstruction, remodeling or any kind of work on your property or structures, it’s always best to have a conversation with the building inspector before you start.  The Village contracts building inspection services out to General Engineering Company in Portage, WI.

2. How much are inspection fees?

Inspection fees are dependent upon the type and extent of work that’s going to be completed.  The Village’s Fee Schedule can be found here: https://wi-poynette.civicplus.com/DocumentCenter/View/341/Poynette-Fee-Schedule---11112019?bidId= .  However, it’s always best to first have a conversation with the building inspector to better understand the fee structure that might apply to your project.

3. Why do I have to pay inspection fees?

The Village’s building inspection services are based entirely on a user fee system.  Essentially, if you use the service you pay for it, as opposed to all of the Village’s taxpayers picking up the cost of the service. 

4. Why do I need a building permit or inspection?

The purpose of building codes is to provide minimum standards for safety, health, and general welfare including structural integrity, mechanical integrity (including sanitation, water supply, light, and ventilation), means of egress, fire prevention and control, and energy conservation. 

The State of Wisconsin adopts rules governing building codes and local municipalities employ inspectors to ensure they are carried out.
