Frozen Water Laterals and Pipes

Many local news agencies are advising people to let their water run to try to avoid frozen laterals. The Village is advising property owners that is a good precautionary measure. If the temperature of your water gets to 38º or below, please contact the Village so that we are aware of the issue. As we discover areas that are being affected we will be contacting residents to advise that they start taking this measure. If you choose to keep your water running, please let it run at least a fast trickle to keep the water flowing.

If your water pipes do freeze:

·      Consult a professional plumber before taking action.

·      If trying to thaw frozen pipes on your own never attempt to thaw the pipes with an open flame such as a propane torch. This may cause the pipes to explode and could also easily catch your home on fire. Instead use an electric hairdryer to thaw the frozen pipes, but never leave it unattended.

If frozen water pipes burst

·      If it is possible to reach the valve without standing in water, turn off the main valve to avoid further damage.

·      If you can't reach the valve without standing in water, call a professional plumber.

Remember that the water line from your home to the curb box is the property owner’s responsibility. If a water main has broken, it is the Village’s. Please contact the Village Utility Office at 635-2122 from 8 am to 4:30 pm if you have any questions about frozen pipes or laterals.
